These special phrases are also applicable to anyone reading a PhD dissertation or academic paper.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<p><li>&#8220;It has long been known&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t look up the original reference.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;A definite trend is evident&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nThese data are practically meaningless.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<li>&#8220;While it has not been possible to provide definite answers to the questions&#8221;&#8230;An unsuccessful experiment but I still hope to get it published.<\/li>\n<p><li>&#8220;Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nThe other results didn&#8217;t make any sense.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;Typical results are shown&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nThis is the prettiest graph.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;These results will be in a subsequent report&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nI might get around to this sometime, if pushed\/funded.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;In my experience&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nOnce.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;In case after case&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nTwice.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;In a series of cases&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nThree times.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;It is believed that&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nI think.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;It is generally believed that&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nA couple of others think so, too.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;Correct within an order of magnitude&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nWrong.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;According to statistical analysis&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nRumor has it.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;A statistically-oriented projection of the significance of these findings&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nA wild guess.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;A careful analysis of obtainable data&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nThree pages of notes were obliterated when I knocked over a glass of iced tea.\n<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding of this phenomenon occurs&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t understand it.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;After additional study by my colleagues&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nThey don&#8217;t understand it either.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;Thanks are due to Joe Blotz for assistance with the experiment and to Cindy Adams for valuable discussions&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nMr. Blotz did the work and Ms. Adams explained to me what it meant.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;A highly significant area for exploratory study&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nA totally useless topic selected by my committee.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<p><li>&#8220;It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in this field&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nI quit.<\/li>\n<\/p>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following list of phrases and their definitions might help you understand the mysterious language of science and medicine.
