The lists are always interesting.  Here&#8217;s the list for the Class of 2007&#8230;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ricky Nelson, Richard Burton, Samantha Smith, Laura Ashley, Orson Welles, Karen Ann Quinlan, Benigno Aquino, and the U.S. Football League have always been dead.<\/li>\n<li>They are not familiar with the source of that \u201cGiant Sucking Sound.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Iraq has always been a problem.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCtrl + Alt + Del\u201d is as basic as \u201cABC.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Paul Newman has always made salad dressing.<\/li>\n<li>Pete Rose has always been a gambler.<\/li>\n<li>Bert and Ernie are old enough to be their parents.<\/li>\n<li>An automatic is a weapon, not a transmission.<\/li>\n<li>Russian leaders have always looked like leaders everyplace else.<\/li>\n<li>The snail darter has never been endangered.<\/li>\n<li>There has always been a screening test for AIDS.<\/li>\n<li>Gas has always been unleaded.<\/li>\n<li>They never heard Howard Cosell call a game on ABC.<\/li>\n<li>The United States has always had a Poet Laureate<\/li>\n<li>Garrison Keillor has always been live on public radio and Lawrence Welk has always been dead on public television.<\/li>\n<li>Their families drove SUVs without \u201cbeing fuelish.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>There has always been some association between fried eggs and your brain.<\/li>\n<li>They would never leave their calling card on someone\u2019s desk.<\/li>\n<li>They have never been able to find the \u201creturn\u201d key.<\/li>\n<li>Computers have always fit in their backpacks.<\/li>\n<li>Datsuns have never been made.<\/li>\n<li>They have never gotten excited over a telegram, a long distance call, or a fax.<\/li>\n<li>The Osmonds are just talk show hosts.<\/li>\n<li>Undergraduate college athletes have always been a part of the NBA and NFL draft.<\/li>\n<li>They have always \u201cgrazed\u201d for food.<\/li>\n<li>Three-point shots from \u201cdowntown\u201d have always been a part of basketball.<\/li>\n<li>Test tube babies are now having their own babies.<\/li>\n<li>Stores have always had scanners at the checkout.<\/li>\n<li>The Army has always driven Humvees.<\/li>\n<li>Adam and PC Junior computers had vanished from the market before this generation went online.<\/li>\n<li>The Statue of Liberty has always had a gleaming torch.<\/li>\n<li>They have always had a PIN number.<\/li>\n<li>Banana Republic has always been a store, not a puppet government in Latin America.<\/li>\n<li>Car detailing has always been available.<\/li>\n<li>Directory assistance has never been free.<\/li>\n<li>The Jaycees have always welcomed women as members.<\/li>\n<li>There has always been Lean Cuisine.<\/li>\n<li>They have always been able to fly Virgin Atlantic.<\/li>\n<li>There have never been dress codes in restaurants.<\/li>\n<li>Doctors have always had to deal with \u201creasonable and customary fees\u201d and patients have always had controls placed on the number of days they could stay in a hospital.<\/li>\n<li>They have always been able to make photocopies at home.<\/li>\n<li>Michael Eisner has always been in charge of Disney.<\/li>\n<li>They have always been able to make phone calls from planes.<\/li>\n<li>Yuppies are almost as old as hippies.<\/li>\n<li>Rupert Murdoch has always been an American citizen.<\/li>\n<li>Strawberry Fields has always been in New York.<\/li>\n<li>Rock and Roll has always been a force for social good.<\/li>\n<li>Killer bees have always been swarming in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>They have never seen a First Lady in a fur coat.<\/li>\n<li>Don Imus has always been offending someone in his national audience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In all fairness it should be understood that students entering college this fall do have a few items on their own lists that will separate them from many of their mentors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For many of them today, it\u2019s all about the \u201cbling, bling.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>They know who the \u201cHeroes in a half shell\u201d are.<\/li>\n<li>Peeps are not a candy, they are your friends.<\/li>\n<li>They have been \u201cdissing\u201dand \u201cburning\u201d things all their lives.<\/li>\n<li>They can expect to get a ticket for \u201cricing out their wheels.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>They knew how to pop a Popple and trade a Pog.<\/li>\n<li>They can still sing the rap chorus to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the theme song from Duck Tales.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year Beloit College prepares a list for it&#8217;s faculty to remind them how different the world the incoming freshmen were raised in is from the world they were raised in.
