The lists are always interesting.  Here&#8217;s the list for the Class of 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Most students entering college this fall in the class of 2006, were born in 1984.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Southerner has always been President of the United States.<\/li>\n<li>Richard Burton, Ricky Nelson and Truman Capote have always been dead.<\/li>\n<li>South Africa&#8217;s official policy of apartheid has not existed during their lifetime.<\/li>\n<li>Cars have always had eye-level rear stop lights, CD players, and air bags.<\/li>\n<li>We have always been able to choose our long distance carriers.<\/li>\n<li>Weather reports have always been available 24-hours a day on television.<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;evil empire&#8221; has moved from Moscow to a setting in some distant galaxy.<\/li>\n<li>Big Brother is merely a television show.<\/li>\n<li>Cyberspace has always existed.<\/li>\n<li>Bruce Springsteen&#8217;s new hit, Born in the USA, could have been played to celebrate their birth.<\/li>\n<li>Barbie has always had a job.<\/li>\n<li>Telephone bills have always been totally incomprehensible.<\/li>\n<li>Prom dresses have always come in basic black.<\/li>\n<li>A &#8220;Hair Band&#8221; is some sort of fashion accessory.<\/li>\n<li>George Foreman has always been a barbecue grill salesman.<\/li>\n<li>Afghanistan has always been a front page story.<\/li>\n<li>There has always been an heir to the heir to the British throne.<\/li>\n<li>They have no recollection of Connie Chung or Geraldo Rivera as serious journalists.<\/li>\n<li>Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, and Tom Brokaw have always anchored the evening news.<\/li>\n<li>China has always been a market-based reforming regime.<\/li>\n<li>The United States has always been trying to put nuclear waste in Nevada.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. and the Soviets have always been partners in space.<\/li>\n<li>Mrs. Fields&#8217; cookies and Swatch watches have always been favorites.<\/li>\n<li>Nicolas Cage, Daryll Hannah, Eddie Murphy, and John Malkovich made their first major film impressions the year they were born.<\/li>\n<li>The GM Saturn has always been on the road.<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Fab Four&#8221; are not a male rock group, but four women enjoying Sex and the City.<\/li>\n<li>Fox has always been a television network choice.<\/li>\n<li>Males do not carry a handkerchief in a back pocket.<\/li>\n<li>This generation has never wanted to &#8220;Be a Pepper, too.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Ozzy&#8217;s lifestyle has nothing to do with the Nelson family.<\/li>\n<li>Women have always had tattoos.<\/li>\n<li>Vanessa Williams and Madonna are aging singers.<\/li>\n<li>Perrier has always come in flavors.<\/li>\n<li>Cherry Coke has always come in cans.<\/li>\n<li>A &#8220;hotline&#8221; is a consumer service rather than a phone used to avoid accidental nuclear war.<\/li>\n<li>The drug &#8220;ecstasy&#8221; has always been around.<\/li>\n<li>Genetic testing and DNA screening have always been available.<\/li>\n<li>Electronic filing of federal income taxes has always been an option.<\/li>\n<li>Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has always been available to doctors.<\/li>\n<li>Trivial Pursuit may have been played by their parents the night before they were born.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. has always maintained that it has a &#8220;clear right to use force against terrorism.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The drinking age has always been 21 throughout the country.<\/li>\n<li>Women have always been members of the Jaycees.<\/li>\n<li>The center of chic has shifted from Studio 54 to Liza&#8217;s living room, live!<\/li>\n<li>Julian Lennon had his only hit the year they were born.<\/li>\n<li>Sylvan Learning Centers have always been an after-school option.<\/li>\n<li>Hip-hop and rap have always been popular musical forms.<\/li>\n<li>They grew up in minivans.<\/li>\n<li>Scientists have always recognized the impact of acid rain.<\/li>\n<li>The Coen Brothers have always been making films.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And in 1984, perhaps it was &#8220;Too Soon to Tell&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Technology analysts questioned the need for briefcase-sized computers.<\/li>\n<li>The National Children and Youth Fitness Study announced that children were overweight and underactive.<\/li>\n<li>A CPA organization heralded that computerized audit systems were being used to avoid errors and they were doing much better at spotting mistakes and providing internal audit controls.<\/li>\n<li>Film critics declared that George Lucas was looking for new directions because Star Wars interest was waning.<\/li>\n<li>Videotape technology was said to be killing the film industry and slowing cable network development.<\/li>\n<li>Analysts stated there was no market for Direct Broadcast Satellite systems.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. Supreme Court declared sleeping to be a form of free speech.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year Beloit College prepares a list for it&#8217;s faculty to remind them how different the world the incoming freshmen were raised in is from the world they were raised in.
