The lists are always interesting.  Here&#8217;s the list for the Class of 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Most students entering college this fall in the class of 2004, were born in 1982.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grace Kelly, Elvis Presley, Karen Carpenter, and the E.R.A. have always been dead.<\/li>\n<li>Kurt Cobain\u2019s death was the \u201cday the music died.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Somebody named George Bush has been on every national ticket, except one, since they were born.<\/li>\n<li>The Kennedy tragedy was a plane crash, not an assassination.<\/li>\n<li>Huckleberry Finn has always been a \u201cbanned book.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A \u201c45\u201d is a gun, not a record with a large hole in the center.<\/li>\n<li>They have no clue what the Beach Boys were talking about when they sang about a 409, and the Little Deuce Coupe.<\/li>\n<li>They have probably never lost anything in shag carpeting.<\/li>\n<li>MASH and The Muppet Show have always been in re-runs.<\/li>\n<li>Punk Rock is an activist movement, not a musical form.<\/li>\n<li>They have always bought telephones, rather than rent them from AT&amp;T.<\/li>\n<li>The year they were born, AIDS was found to have killed 164 people; finding a cure for the new disease was designated a \u201ctop priority\u201d for government-sponsored research.<\/li>\n<li>We have always been able to reproduce DNA in the laboratory.<\/li>\n<li>Wars begin and end quickly; peace-keeping missions go on forever.<\/li>\n<li>There have always been ATM machines.<\/li>\n<li>The President has always addressed the nation on the radio on Saturday.<\/li>\n<li>We have always been able to receive television signals by direct broadcast satellite.<\/li>\n<li>Cities have always been trying to ban the possession and sale of handguns.<\/li>\n<li>Watergate is as relevant to their lives as the Teapot Dome scandal.<\/li>\n<li>They have no idea that a \u201cpresidential scandal\u201d once meant nothing more than Ronald Reagan taking President Carter\u2019s briefing book in \u201cDebategate.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>They have never referred to Russia and China as \u201cthe Reds.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Toyotas and Hondas have always been made in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>There has always been a national holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/li>\n<li>Three Mile Island is ancient history, and nuclear accidents happen in other countries.<\/li>\n<li>Around-the-clock coverage of congress, public affairs, weather reports, and rock videos has always been available on cable.<\/li>\n<li>Senator Phil Gramm has always been a Republican.<\/li>\n<li>Women sailors have always been stationed on U.S. Navy ships.<\/li>\n<li>The year they were born, the New York Times announced that the \u201cboom in video games,\u201d a fad, had come to an end.<\/li>\n<li>Congress has been questioning computer intrusion into individuals\u2019 personal lives since they were born.<\/li>\n<li>Bear Bryant has never coached at Alabama.<\/li>\n<li>They have always been able to afford Calvin Klein.<\/li>\n<li>Coors Beer has always been sold east of the Mississippi, eliminating the need for Burt Reynolds to outrun the authorities in the Smokey and the Bandit films.<\/li>\n<li>They were born the same year that Ebony and Ivory lived in perfect harmony.<\/li>\n<li>The year they were born, Dustin Hoffman wore a dress and Julie Andrews wore a tuxedo.<\/li>\n<li>Elton John has only been heard on easy listening stations.<\/li>\n<li>Woodstock is a bird or a reunion, not a cultural touchstone.<\/li>\n<li>They have never heard a phone \u201cring.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>They never dressed up for a plane flight.<\/li>\n<li>Hurricanes have always had men\u2019s and women\u2019s names.<\/li>\n<li>Lawn darts have always been illegal.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cComing out\u201d parties celebrate more than debutantes.<\/li>\n<li>They only know Madonna singing American Pie.<\/li>\n<li>They neither know who Billy Joe was, nor wondered what he was doing on the Talahatchee Bridge.<\/li>\n<li>They never thought of Jane Fonda as \u201cHanoi Jane,\u201d nor associated her with any revolution other than the \u201cFitness Revolution\u201d videotape they may have found in the attic.<\/li>\n<li>The Osmonds are talk show hosts.<\/li>\n<li>They have never used a bottle of \u201cWhite Out.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If they vaguely remember the night the Berlin Wall fell, they are probably not sure why it was up in the first place.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSpam\u201d and \u201ccookies\u201d are not necessarily foods.<\/li>\n<li>They feel more danger from having sex and being in school, than from possible nuclear war.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year Beloit College prepares a list for it&#8217;s faculty to remind them how different the world the incoming freshmen were raised in is from the world they were raised in.
