{"id":3425,"date":"2015-01-25T10:28:59","date_gmt":"2015-01-25T08:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joke-archives.com\/?p=3425"},"modified":"2015-01-25T10:28:59","modified_gmt":"2015-01-25T08:28:59","slug":"ode-to-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joke-archives.com\/?p=3425","title":{"rendered":"Ode to Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The devil wanted a place on earth<br \/>\nSort of a summer home<br \/>\nA place to spend his vacation<br \/>\nWhenever he wanted to roam.<br \/>\nSo he picked out Texas<br \/>\nA place both wretched and rough<br \/>\nWhere the climate was to his liking<br \/>\nAnd the cowboys hardened and tough.<\/p>\n<p>He dried up the streams in the canyons<br \/>\nAnd ordered no rain to fall<br \/>\nHe dried up the lakes in the valleys<br \/>\nThen baked and scorched it all.<\/p>\n<p>Then over his barren country<br \/>\nHe transplanted shrubs from hell.<br \/>\nThe cactus, thistle and prickly pear<br \/>\nThe climate suited them well.<\/p>\n<p>Now the home was much to his liking<br \/>\nBut animal life, he had none.<br \/>\nSo he created crawling creatures<br \/>\nThat all mankind would shun.<\/p>\n<p>First he made the rattlesnake<br \/>\nWith it&#8217;s forked poisonous tongue.<br \/>\nTaught it to strike and rattle<br \/>\nAnd how to swallow it&#8217;s young.<\/p>\n<p>Then he made scorpions and lizards<br \/>\nAnd the ugly old horned toad.<br \/>\nHe placed spiders of every description<br \/>\nUnder rocks by the side of the road.<\/p>\n<p>Then he ordered the sun to shine hotter,<br \/>\nHotter and hotter still.<br \/>\nUntil even the cactus wilted<br \/>\nAnd the old horned lizard took ill.<\/p>\n<p>Then he gazed on his earthly kingdom<br \/>\nAs any creator would<br \/>\nHe chuckled a little up his sleeve<br \/>\nAnd admitted that it was good.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Twas summer now and Satan lay<br \/>\nBy a prickly pear to rest.<br \/>\nThe sweat rolled off his swarthy brow<br \/>\nSo he took off his coat and vest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By Golly,&#8221; he finally panted,<br \/>\n&#8220;I did my job too well,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m going back to where I came from,<br \/>\nTexas is hotter than Hell.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The devil wanted a place on earth Sort of a summer home A place to spend his vacation Whenever he wanted to roam.
